Training

Informed by research and extensive experience of working with learners with Down syndrome from birth to 18 years, Together 21 has developed face to face training and support for both professionals and families.

​All content, developed and led by our Specialist Advisory Teacher Maggie Hart, aims to equip people with practical knowledge and skills they can apply for each unique setting and child.

Our Training Offer

Introductory Training Early Years: Professionals

During this informative and positive session, we will look at

  • What Down syndrome is

  • The specific learning profile of a child with Down syndrome

  • Strategies to support children’s learning in an early years setting.

​

We will practically explore resources and strategies to support across the EYFS and specifically in the areas of early language development, literacy, and numeracy skills.

​

In addition, there will be a question & answer around early education and development and how our strategies might work in your setting, with education consultant and specialist Down syndrome advisory teacher, Maggie Hart.

​

This course takes 2 ½ hours and costs £30.

Speech & Language Development

In this course we look at:

  • The typical language & communication profile of an individual with Down syndrome and the specific challenges they might face.

  • How skills across communication, vocabulary, grammar, speech and working memory are linked.

  • Interventions to help you plan and assess across each area

  • The importance of social language, the role of parents and how we can support them.

This course takes 4 hours and costs £55.

Accredited Makaton Training 

Level 1 Workshop

​

Level 1 training provides a practical introduction to the Makaton Language Programme and a wider understanding of learning and communication difficulties.

​

  • How to start using Makaton in everyday situations

  • Immediate needs, home, familiar people, food, events, activities and objects.

  • You will also discover hints and tips for effective signing and symbol use to maximise communication.

​

Study materials: You will receive a Participant's Manual, which includes the Makaton symbols and signs that you learn in the workshop. You will also be given a certificate of attendance. After completing Level 1 you can continue your Makaton journey and move onto Level 2 training.

​

One whole day 6 hours or two 3 hour sessions  - the cost is £77.

Bespoke Programme

This support includes termly visits to provide:

  • Observations to inform recommendations (particularly literacy and numeracy learning).

  • Direct teaching and modelling of approaches and best practice

  • Advice on effective support, differentiation and inclusion

  • Addressing any issues as they arise

  • Advice and assistance with planning, measuring and assessing progress

  • Written feedback

  • Functional analysis of behaviour to promote positive interaction

  • Ongoing staff training to promote and support understanding of the specific learning needs of a child with Down Syndrome

  • Attendance at the Annual Review, with written report.
